If you’ve been curious about Reformer Pilates but find yourself wondering, “Is Reformer Pilates good for beginners?” the answer is simple:

Absolutely.

In fact, the Reformer can be an incredible place to begin your Pilates practice—as long as you’re learning in the right environment with qualified instruction.

At studio47 Pilates, we love beginners. After more than 18 years of teaching Pilates, we know that everyone has a first class.

That’s exactly why we created FOUNDATION47, our beginner-friendly Reformer Pilates class offered at both our Warren, Rhode Island and Mashpee, Massachusetts studios.

What Is Reformer Pilates?

The Pilates Reformer is a specialized piece of equipment that uses a moving carriage, springs, straps, and other components to create resistance and support.

It may look intimidating the first time you see it.

We promise—it won’t for long.

The Reformer allows you to work on strength, mobility, balance, coordination, stability, and control through a huge variety of exercises. The spring resistance can provide challenge, but it can also provide assistance—which is one reason Reformer Pilates can work so well for beginners.

The key isn’t already knowing what you’re doing.

The key is having someone teach you.

Do I Need to Be Fit or Flexible to Start Reformer Pilates?

No.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions we hear from new clients.

You do not need to get in shape before starting Pilates.

You do not need to be flexible.

You do not need a strong core.

And you definitely don’t need to understand how a Reformer works before walking into your first class.

Those are all things your Pilates practice can help you develop.

If you’ve been searching for Pilates for beginners because you’re nervous about starting, know that you won’t be expected to walk into studio47 already knowing the terminology, equipment, or exercises.

That’s what we’re here to teach you.

Meet FOUNDATION47: Reformer Pilates for Beginners

We created FOUNDATION47 specifically to give new clients a place to begin.

During class, you’ll become familiar with the Reformer, learn foundational Pilates exercises and terminology, and begin understanding the principles that will help you move safely and confidently through future classes.

And because our classes are intentionally small, your instructor can actually see you.

That means we can offer cues, help you adjust your equipment, answer questions, and provide modifications when appropriate.

Our goal isn’t for you to walk out of your first class knowing everything.

It’s for you to walk out thinking:

“I can do this.”

Your First Reformer Pilates Class Should Teach You Something

There’s an important distinction between simply taking a workout and learning Pilates.

Pilates is a method.

The more you understand the equipment, your body, and the principles behind the movements, the more you’ll get out of your practice.

That’s why qualified instruction matters—especially when you’re a beginner.

At studio47, our instructors are highly trained Pilates professionals, and education is an important part of who we are.

Our Cape Cod studio is a Balanced Body Authorized Training Center, which means we don’t just teach Pilates classes—we help educate Pilates instructors.

We teach the teachers.

Whether you’re joining us in Warren or Mashpee, you’ll be learning in a studio where Pilates education and quality instruction matter.

What Happens After FOUNDATION47?

FOUNDATION47 is your starting point—not your finish line.

As you become more comfortable and confident, you’ll have opportunities to explore more of what the Pilates method has to offer.

studio47 isn’t a Reformer-only studio.

We teach the full Pilates system, with professional equipment including Reformers, Cadillacs, Chairs, Towers, Arcs, Spine Correctors, Ladder Barrels, and more across our two locations.

Your practice can grow with you.

You might progress into more challenging Reformer classes, explore different Pilates apparatus, try circuit-style programming, or decide to work one-on-one in private sessions.

That’s one of the things we love most about Pilates: there’s always somewhere to go next.

What Should I Know Before My First Reformer Pilates Class?

A few simple things can make your first class feel easier:

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in. Grip socks are recommended for Pilates equipment. Arrive a few minutes early so you can get settled and meet your instructor.

Most importantly, don’t worry about being a beginner.

Nobody walks into their first Pilates class knowing what a footbar, carriage, or spring setting means.

You’ll learn.

That’s the point.
