Thinking about trying Reformer Pilates but not quite sure what to expect?
You’re not alone! One of the most common questions we hear from new clients is, “What should I expect at my first Reformer Pilates class?”
Maybe you’ve seen the equipment on social media, heard friends rave about Pilates, or have been searching for beginner Reformer Pilates classes near you. Whatever brought you here, we’re glad you’re curious.
At studio47 Pilates, we love beginners! With studios in Warren, Rhode Island, and Mashpee, Massachusetts, we’ve spent more than 18 years helping people discover the Pilates method.
And we’re here to make your first experience feel comfortable, welcoming, and fun.
1. Start With the Right Class: FOUNDATION47
Your first Pilates class shouldn’t feel overwhelming.
That’s why we created FOUNDATION47, our beginner-friendly Reformer Pilates class offered at both studio47 locations.
FOUNDATION47 introduces you to the Pilates Reformer, foundational movements, and essential techniques that will help you build confidence as you progress.
You don’t need previous Pilates experience, flexibility, or a strong core to begin.
We’ll teach you everything you need to know.
2. What Should You Wear to Your First Reformer Pilates Class?
One of the easiest parts of preparing for your first Pilates class is deciding what to wear.
Here’s what we recommend:
- Comfortable, fitted workout clothing that allows you to move freely.
- Grip socks to provide traction on the equipment.
- Minimal jewelry and hair secured away from your face.
- A water bottle to stay hydrated.
You won’t need sneakers, special equipment, or an elaborate workout outfit.
Just come ready to move!
3. Arrive Early and Get Comfortable
We recommend arriving approximately 10 minutes before your first class.
This gives you time to check in, meet your instructor, become familiar with the studio, and ask any questions.
You’ll see Reformers throughout the studio, along with other professional Pilates apparatus.
If the equipment looks unfamiliar, don’t worry.
Everyone has a first day!
4. What Actually Happens During a Reformer Pilates Class?
The Pilates Reformer is a specialized piece of equipment featuring a moving carriage, adjustable springs, straps, and a footbar.
Your instructor will introduce you to the equipment and explain how it works.
Throughout your 50-minute class, you’ll experience a variety of exercises designed to develop:
- Core and full-body strength
- Mobility and flexibility
- Balance and coordination
- Stability and control
- Body awareness and movement quality
You may perform exercises lying down, sitting, kneeling, or standing, depending on the class and your individual needs.
The springs provide varying levels of resistance and assistance, allowing exercises to be adjusted for different abilities.
And here’s something important to know: Pilates isn’t about keeping up with the person next to you.
It’s about learning to move your own body with intention.
5. Will Reformer Pilates Be Hard for a Beginner?
Pilates can absolutely be challenging—even when the movements look simple!
You may discover muscles you haven’t paid much attention to before, and learning new movement patterns can require concentration.
But your first class isn’t a test.
At studio47, our instructors provide guidance, corrections, and appropriate modifications to help you learn.
Our small-group classes allow for more individualized attention, so you’re not left trying to figure everything out on your own.
You don’t have to do everything perfectly.
You just have to show up and be willing to learn.
6. What Makes Your First Class at studio47 Different?
Not all Reformer Pilates experiences are created equal.
At studio47, we believe the quality of instruction is just as important as the workout itself.
Our instructors are highly trained Pilates professionals, and our Mashpee studio is a Balanced Body Authorized Training Center, where Pilates instructors come to further their education.
In other words, we teach the teachers!
We also teach the full Pilates system, not just the Reformer.
Both studios feature professional Pilates equipment, including Reformers, Chairs, Cadillacs, and additional apparatus, giving you opportunities to continue growing your practice.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or eventually want to explore more advanced Pilates programming, there’s always something new to learn.
7. What Happens After Your First Pilates Class?
You might leave feeling energized, challenged, more aware of your posture, or pleasantly surprised by how much concentration Pilates requires.
You may also experience some muscle soreness as your body adjusts to unfamiliar movements.
Most importantly, remember that Pilates is a practice.
The more consistently you attend, the more familiar the exercises become, and the more confidently you’ll move.
FOUNDATION47 gives you a place to begin, and our instructors can help guide you toward additional classes as you’re ready.
